ALZET泵的运行主要是因为泵内渗透层的隔室与植入泵所在组织环境间存在的渗透压差。渗透层的高渗透压使组织中的水分通过泵外表面的半透膜流入泵中，当水进入渗透层时，它会压缩柔性储液罐，以受控的预定速率将测试溶液从泵中排出。由于无法重新填充压缩储液罐，因此泵仅设计为一次性使用。

ALZET泵的输送速率是由泵外膜的透水性控制，因此泵的输送曲线与分配的药物制剂无关。各种分子构型的药物，包括电离药物和大分子，可以在各种兼容的载体中以受控的速率连续分配。化合物的分子量或其物理和化学性质与其通过ALZET泵的输送速率无关。

ALZET泵的容积输送率在制造时是固定的。ALZET渗透泵具有0.11~10μL/hr之间的各种输送速率和1天~6周之间的输送持续时间。虽然泵的体积输送速率是固定的，但可以通过改变用于填充泵储液器的溶液或悬浮液中的药剂浓度来实现不同的给药速率。
